Built-In Analytics.

If you post regularly on Instagram or Facebook but aren’t quite sure whether it’s actually working for your business, then it’s time to begin understanding social media insights. These built-in analytics tools are a goldmine of information that can help you understand what’s working, what needs tweaking, and how to attract more engagement and reach.

In this blog, we’ll break down what Facebook and Instagram insights are, how to find them, what the numbers mean, and how to use them to track your business performance online.

We’ll keep it simple to start with and go into more depth once you’ve got the basics nailed.

What Are Social Media Insights?

Social media insights are analytics provided by Facebook and Instagram that show how your content is performing. They help answer questions like how many people are seeing your posts, whether people are engaging with what you’re sharing, and when the best time to post might be.

By understanding these metrics, you can make better decisions about what content to share and when.

How to Access Your Insights.

If you’re using a Facebook Business Page:

  • Go to your page.
  • Click on “Insights” in the left-hand menu (desktop).
  • Alternatively, use the Meta Business Suite to view combined Facebook and Instagram analytics.

Make sure your Instagram account is set to a Business or Creator profile:

  • Go to your profile.
  • Tap the three lines in the top-right corner.
  • Tap “Insights”.
  • From there, you can see data for posts, stories, reels and more.

Key Metrics Explained.

Let’s look at the core stats you’ll come across and what they actually mean for your business:

Reach – This shows how many unique people saw your content. A higher reach indicates better visibility.

Impressions – The total number of times your content was shown. This can include multiple views by the same person.

Engagement – Includes likes, comments, shares, saves, and link clicks. High engagement means people are interested and interacting.

Follower Growth – Tracks how your audience is growing over time. Steady growth suggests your content is attracting interest.

Top Content – Highlights your best-performing posts. Use this to guide future content creation.

Good Performance.

What qualifies as ‘good’ performance can vary depending on your industry, audience size, and overall goals, but there are some general benchmarks to guide small businesses. An engagement rate between 1% and 5% is typically considered average to good. Your reach should ideally grow steadily on a weekly or monthly basis, showing that more people are seeing your content over time. Additionally, keep an eye on link clicks. If at least 2% of viewers are clicking through to your website, you’re on the right track.

Tracking these metrics consistently over time allows you to identify patterns, measure growth, and understand what content connects best with your audience.

How to Use Insights to Improve Results.

If your engagement is low, but reach is high, your content may be too generic. Try asking a question or adding a call to action. If your reach is low, consider experimenting with hashtags, posting times, or different content formats like reels or carousels.

Don’t just look at a single post in isolation. Review your insights weekly or monthly to build a fuller picture of what’s going on.

Active Times.

Instagram and Facebook will both show you when your followers are most active. Posting during these times increases the chances of your content being seen and engaged with. These times can change, so keep checking monthly.
