Small Business Websites.

Websites That Turn Visitors Into Customers

Do you want to know what it feels like when a new customer says, “I found you online, and I love your website”? That is what we build at Sokada. Bespoke websites for small businesses that rank on Google, and actually bring you the enquiries you have been waiting for.

Small Business Web Design That Brings In The Enquiries.

Sokada is an East Sussex based agency that specialises in small business web design across the UK. We build bespoke websites for small businesses with one priority, the enquiries the site brings in. Every build is custom-coded in WordPress, optimised for Google and AI search engines like ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews, and joined up with the marketing that drives traffic to it. The thing is, most small business websites are built as a one-off design project and then left to do nothing. That is the problem we solve, and we have spent over a decade working out how to solve it properly.

Why Most Websites Stop Bringing In Leads.

A website only really works when the build, the on-page structure, the SEO and the marketing are all joined up from day one. Most are not. They get built as a one-off job, ticked off a list, then left to magically pull in customers on their own. They never do. So we build sites properly, with leads as the only measure of success, because if a website is not bringing in enquiries it is basically just an expensive online brochure.

My website looks lovely but the phone never rings

This is the most common thing we hear from small business owners, and it is painful because they have usually paid good money for a site that just sits there. They have been told the design looks great. The colours match the brand. The logo is nicely centred. And yet, nothing. No leads, no calls, no form fills.

The problem is almost never the design itself. It is that the site was built without a plan for how Google would find it, how visitors would actually use it, or how the words on the page would convince anyone to get in touch. So a great looking site that nobody ever sees, or that does not say the right thing when they get there, ends up doing nothing for the business. That is a really common, really frustrating place to be, and it is why we exist.

We have had three websites and nothing ever changed

We hear this one a lot too. The owner has been around the block. Built a site with a freelancer. Tried again with a bigger agency. Maybe even had a go on a DIY platform. Each time, the same result. A new logo, a new colour scheme, the same silence afterwards.

That is because the same mistake gets repeated each time. The website is treated as a design project rather than a lead generation project. Nobody asks the right questions about who the customer actually is, what they search for, or what they need to read before they pick up the phone. Until that changes, the next site will go the same way as the last three.

Why Most Websites Fail To Bring In Leads.

There is usually a handful of reasons that websites for small businesses do not pull their weight. The site was built on a cheap template, so it loads slowly and is missing the structure Google needs to understand it. The copy was written by someone who does not really understand the business, so the page never properly answers what the customer is asking. There is no SEO foundation, so the site is basically invisible. And there is no joined up marketing pulling the right people back to it.

We see this on almost every audit we do. The components that should work together are split across different people who do not talk to each other. The web designer hands off, the SEO person turns up later and tries to retrofit, and the marketing agency runs ads to a page that was never built to convert. It is a mess, and the small business owner is the one paying for all three.

If any of this sounds familiar, our lead generation audit is a good place to start. We score your site against 22 points and tell you exactly why it is not bringing in enquiries, with no fluff and no upselling for the sake of it.

How A Website Should Actually Be Built.

The way we approach it, the website is the foundation. Everything else, the SEO, the GEO, the on-page schema, the content, the ads, all of it sits on top. So we always start with the build. Bespoke code, fast loading, structured cleanly so Google and the new AI search tools can read it. Clean URLs, sensible site architecture, internal linking sorted, the lot.

Then the words. Every page is written to answer a real question a real customer has. We follow a proven structure that takes someone from “I have just landed on this page” to “I am getting in touch” without making them work for it. The structure matters as much as the words. Headers in the right order, key information up top, calls to action where they make sense, schema markup in the background telling Google what is what.

The Thing With Smaller Websites...

Smaller websites are a different beast from big corporate sites or large ecommerce builds. The owner usually wears five hats, the budget has to work harder, and there is no marketing department in the background tweaking things. So the site has to do a lot of the work on its own. It has to be found, it has to convince, and it has to make it dead easy for someone to get in touch.

We have built websites for trades, professional services, retail shops, clinics, restaurants, manufacturers and a lot of niche operators in between. The pattern is the same. The owner is too busy to mess about. They want a site that brings in work and they want to see proof it is doing that. So that is what we build.

We are based in Heathfield, East Sussex, and a fair chunk of our clients are local, in towns like Hailsham, Uckfield, Crowborough, Lewes and across the Weald. But we work with small businesses all over the UK. The Heathfield office is just where the team sits and where the work happens. Most projects run over Zoom and email anyway, so location doesn’t really matter much.

How We Build Websites That Generate Enquiries.

Our process is structured but it is not stiff. We start by getting properly under the skin of the business. What do customers actually search for? What do they care about? What is the real reason they pick one supplier over another? You would be amazed how often that question has never been answered properly before we ask it.

From there, we plan the site. Sitemap, page structure, keyword mapping, content brief, the lot. Then the build, in WordPress nine times out of ten, with bespoke design and custom blocks so the site is genuinely unique and easy for the owner to update later. We do not use page builders that bloat the code. We do not use cookie cutter themes. Every site is built clean and fast, and we build WordPress sites the way they should be built, with proper code rather than drag and drop fluff.

The copy is written specifically to rank in Google and convert visitors into enquiries. That is a skill in itself, and we have got a process for it that we have refined over years. Headlines, structure, calls to action, schema, the boring SEO bits that most agencies skip. We do not skip them.

Once the site goes live, the real work starts. The build is just the beginning. The site needs feeding, with content, with links, with proper SEO work month after month. Without that, even a great site goes stale.

Web design and marketing have to be joined up.

Here is where most small business owners get caught out. They get a website built. Then they hire someone separately to “do the marketing.” The two never talk. The marketing pulls people to a page that was never written to convert them. The site does not track properly. Nobody knows what is working and nobody can prove it.

We do it differently. The website and the marketing are one thing. Our digital marketing work, the SEO, the content, the ads, the email, all of it ties back to the site. We track the whole journey from first click to enquiry, so we can show what is bringing in leads and what is not.

This is the single biggest reason small business websites fail. The split between web and marketing. We have fixed it for hundreds of clients, and the difference is night and day.

What’s Included When We Build Your Site.

A bespoke design, drawn up for your business, not a template tweaked to look like one. Custom WordPress build with ACF Gutenberg blocks so you can update the site easily without breaking anything. Mobile first, fully responsive, and properly fast, because Core Web Vitals matter to Google and to customers.

Full on-page SEO setup, schema markup, GEO optimisation for AI search engines (so you turn up in places like ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews), and conversion-focused copy on every page, written by humans who understand small business. Clear analytics and proper lead tracking so you actually know what is working. Hosting on our managed servers, with daily backups, security and updates handled by us. A proper handover, training, and ongoing support if you want it. We also build ecommerce websites for small businesses that need an online shop without a huge budget.

How Long It Takes And What It Costs.

A website with us usually takes between six and ten weeks from start to finish. That is not us dragging it out, it is the time needed to do it properly. Research, planning, design, copy, build, testing, launch.

Cost-wise, it depends on the scope. A focused service-led site might be £3,500 to £6,000. A bigger build with more pages, integrations or ecommerce can run higher. We are upfront about pricing and we will always tell you what something costs before we start. No surprises, no nasty mid-project invoices.

Most clients pair the build with our 12-month SEO subscription, because as we said earlier, the website on its own is just the foundation. The SEO is what makes it grow.

Frequently asked questions.

Explore our frequently asked questions to get a better understanding of how we work and what we can do for you.

How long does it take to build a website?

Most small business websites we build are launched within eight to twelve weeks from sign-off. That gives us proper time for strategy, design, copy, development, SEO set-up, and your own review. Very simple sites can be quicker. More complex sites with e-commerce or membership functionality take longer. We agree a timeline at the start and update you every week.

Will my new small business website rank on Google?

A well-built small business website is designed to rank, and we build every one with that in mind. However, ranking depends on how competitive your sector is, what your competitors are doing, and how much ongoing SEO work is invested after launch. That is exactly why we combine the build with a 12-month SEO subscription rather than selling the site as a one-off. SEO is a process, not a feature.

What makes a small business website actually generate enquiries?

A small business website generates enquiries when four things are in place: it ranks for the queries your customers actually search, it loads fast on mobile, it answers the visitor’s question within the first few seconds, and it makes the next step (call, form, or book) obvious and easy. Miss any one of those and the site will underperform. We build for all four from the start.

.

Can I update the small business website myself after launch?

Yes. Every site we build is on WordPress with a clean, easy-to-use page builder. We train you at handover so you can update text, swap images, add news posts, and adjust pricing without needing us for every change. If you would rather we handle updates, that is included in our support subscriptions.

Do I need separate SEO after my small business website is built?

Most small business owners benefit from ongoing SEO after launch, yes. A new website gives you the structure to rank. Ongoing SEO gives you the fresh content, authority signals, and technical maintenance to keep climbing. We offer this as a monthly subscription that sits alongside the site, so the team who built it is the team ranking it.

Can you redesign an existing small business website instead of starting from scratch?

Sometimes, but not often. If the underlying code is clean, the structure is sound, and the technical foundations are healthy, a redesign can work. In most cases we find that older small business websites have enough compounding issues (slow code, poor structure, Wix or Squarespace limitations, no schema, thin content) that a rebuild is quicker and cheaper in the long run. We will tell you honestly which camp you are in before quoting.

Do you work with small businesses outside East Sussex?

Yes. We are based in Heathfield, East Sussex, and we work with small business owners across Sussex, Kent, Surrey, and the wider South East, as well as nationally on digital projects. The strategy call is free wherever you are. In-person meetings are easier for local clients, but video works just as well for anyone further afield.

I’ve been burnt by agencies before. How are you different?

Fair question, and we hear it a lot. The honest answer is that plenty of small businesses have been let down by someone charging £100 a month to do almost nothing. We’re a small, family-run team. Same faces every month. We explain what we’re doing and why. And we focus on enquiries, not traffic for its own sake.

Based in Heathfield, working across the South East.

We are based in Heathfield, East Sussex, and we work with small businesses across the South East and the UK. Many of our clients are in East Sussex (Heathfield, Uckfield, Lewes, Eastbourne, Hailsham, Crowborough and Tunbridge Wells just over the border), Kent, and West Sussex, with a good number further afield. If you run a small business in the UK and you want a website that actually works, distance is not the deciding factor. The process, the call, and the outcome are the same. We work with many types of business, including wedding venues, accountants, solicitors, catering companies, trades such as plumbers, electricians and much much more.
